Hong Kong BNO Visa – When you are struggling financially
When you are granted your BN(O) visa, you will have ‘no recourse to public funds’ (NRPF). This means that you are expected to fully support yourself through your own financial resources or income from employment. You will not be able to access most public funds including benefits, tax credits and housing assistance that are paid by the state.
The UK government recognises that people might fall on hard times so BN(O) visa holders can apply for a ‘change of conditions’ if you lose your income, are no longer able to provide food and housing for your family and become destitute.
How to apply for a change of conditions
To apply for a change to your conditions, you will need to submit a form to show that you are eligible. This application is free and can be made online.
For more details, see the Home Office information about applying for a change of conditions.
Seeking legal advice
We recommend that you obtain legal advice from an immigration adviser before making a change of conditions application. An immigration adviser (OISC level 1 or above) can provide advice and assist with a change of conditions application.
You will be asked to provide sufficient evidence, including evidence of your financial circumstances and/or living arrangements.
Support from Local Authorities
You may also apply for support from your local authority whilst you wait for a decision on your application to change your Visa conditions. This could be to help with accommodation costs or buying food for you and your family.
You can find your local authority here:
If you are successful in your application for a change of conditions, it will not impact your ability to apply for settlement through the BNO route after 5 years living in the UK.
If your local authority do not support you, please contact the East Midlands Welcome Hub and we will contact them on your behalf.
